Uttlesford Foodbank launches art exhibit to tackle stigma

Titled ‘I Am More’, the exhibit was created by a project team at Uttlesford Foodbank and launched at TouchPoint Stansted on Tuesday, February 18.

The exhibit features 10 labels and 10 stories, all depicting different life challenges.

Des Ashton, the project lead, said: “I Am More is a community art project created by our community, for the community.

“It shows there’s another side to every story.”

Katy Mendes-Day, director of Uttlesford Foodbank, explained the purpose of the exhibit.

She added: “Hardship can happen to anyone.

“The individuals and families we support are from all walks of life.

“I Am More invites compassion and greater understanding for how people’s circumstances can change.”

The launch was attended by just under 50 representatives of different community organisations from across Uttlesford, including Mind in West Essex, Uttlesford District Council, Openroad, Buffy Bus, Essex Libraries, and English Heritage, as well as various close partners of the food bank.

Chair of the council, Cllr Martin Foley, leader of the council, Cllr Petrina Lees, and Cllr Chloe Fiddy were also in attendance.

Councillor Maureen Caton, chair of Stansted Parish Council, said: “I Am More illustrated the emotional impact of our prejudice and how individuals grappled with the stigma and labels we are so ready to apply to others when they have hit their lowest point.

“The insight into individual stories of resilience and self-determination made those individuals the victors and us the victims of our prejudice.

“This was awareness raising at its best.”

Jennie Brown, operations manager at the foodbank, added: “I speak with clients every day.

“This is real. We hope I Am More will change minds, start new conversations and invite people to look beyond the label.”
