A real work of art (Lego)

The art of Van Gogh is being honoured in the latest Lego set based on one of his masterpieces, as the Sunflowers is turned into an amazing 3D model.

This is not the first time that Lego has made a model of a famous work of art, or even one by legendary Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh.

In 2022 they released a Lego-ified version of the iconic The Starry Night and that was such a success that it led to the Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai and even a version of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

These have proven so successful that Lego has now managed to recreate Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers oil painting, using nothing but 2,615 Lego pieces.

Sunflowers is actually the name of two series of paintings created by Van Gogh, starting in 1887. The painting Lego has recreated is the most famous of them though and it’s been designed with the full help of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Like The Starry Night set, the set is a 3D version of Van Gogh’s painting, with the 16 sunflowers all attached to the brick-built canvas in multiple layers, to recreate the shape and colour of the original brush strokes as closely as possible.

The set also comes with a link to a special podcast, created in partnership with the Van Gogh Museum, featuring Senior Curator Nienke Bakker and Lego Designer Stijn Oom, that explains how the set was designed and the history of the original painting.

The end result is 54cm tall, 41cm wide, and 5cm deep, with a removeable frame, that can be attached to the wall, and a tile with Van Gogh’s signature printed on it.

The Sunflowers set is available to pre-order now via the Lego website and will be released on March 1 for £169.99. The Starry Night is already available, for £149.99.

‘Working on one of the world’s most famous paintings can be quite daunting, but recreating Sunflowers has been a dream come true,’ said Lego Designer Stijn Oom. ‘One of the most challenging yet crucial aspects was translating the impasto effect into Lego bricks while preserving the painting’s asymmetrical yet balanced composition.’

If you happen to be in the Netherlands soon, then from March 1 there’ll be life-size brick replicas of the painting at the Lego store in Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum, with Oom putting in an appearance at the Amsterdam Lego store on March 1 (and in Marseille on March 2).

A new brick-built Lego installation will also open at the Van Gogh Museum this summer and run from June to August, before being moved to Lego House Billund, in Denmark, and Lego World, Utrecht in the Netherlands.

If you can’t make any of that in person though a virtual curated tour will be created for later in the year, that everyone can enjoy.
