1812 Theatre Group to stage Yasmina Reza’s ‘Art’ comedy

The show will run from February 26 to March 1, at the Helmsley Arts Centre.

First performed in Paris in 1994, the play has won numerous awards, including the Molière Awards for Best Play, Production, and Author in 1994, and the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy in 1996.

The play poses the question of whether the bond between three friends can withstand one of them, Serge, making an unexpected purchase of an expensive piece of modern art.

This act causes tension with classical art enthusiast Marc, while Yvan, the third friend, tries to mediate despite his own struggles.

In the British debut (1996), the characters were portrayed by Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, and Ken Stott.

In the words of a spokesperson, “the 1812 cast will have their work cut out to fill their shoes!”

John Lister and Mike Martin, who last performed together in 2011, will play Marc and Yvan.

Ivan Limon will take on the role of Serge.

Joanne Lister will make her full directing debut with this production, after helping her husband John to direct 1812’s production of John Godber’s ‘Scary Bikers’ last year.

The performances will be held at the Helmsley Arts Centre at 7.30pm from February 26 to March 1.

Tickets are priced at £12, with concessions available, and can be purchased at the Helmsley Arts Centre or online at www.helmsleyarts.co.uk
