TVM art teacher gets 12-year jail term, Rs 20,000 fine, sexual harrasment, sexual abuse, child molestation, art teacher, Thiruvananthapuram, school, student


Thiruvananthapuram: A special fast-track court has sentenced Rajendran (65), an art teacher from Thiruvananthapuram, to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a class 6 student. Judge R. Rekha, also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000, which is to be paid to the survivor. As per the order, if Rajendran fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional four months in prison.

The assault occurred between May and June 25, 2023, when Rajendran who was a neighbour of the child visited their home to provide painting lessons. During these visits, he inappropriately touched the child’s private parts. On June 25, during his last visit, Rajendran touched the child’s private part under the pretext of showing the kid how to draw the human body.

Although the child was subjected to repeated abuse, the child did not speak out because of fear. Finally, the child revealed the information about the abuse to the mother. The family then lodged a complaint with the Sreekariyam Police.

Special Public Prosecutor R.S. Vijay Mohan, Adv. Atiannur R.Y. Akhilesh represented the prosecution. 13 witnesses and 18 documents were produced in the court as part of the case.

The investigation was conducted by Sreekariyam Police Station Sub-Inspector V.K. Sasikumar and Asha Chandran investigated the case.
