Memorial Art Gallery to abolish admission fees in 2027

Starting in 2027, admission to the University of Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery will be completely free.

Members say the MAG will abandon all entry fees thanks to $9 million in donations through their “Free for All, Forever” campaign. That initiative is meant to allow everyone access to the cultural hub regardless of background and income.

A $1 million donation from the Levitan family recently pushed that campaign to its end goal.

“Making the museum free ensures that everyone can experience the inspiration, learning, and connection that it offers,” Uiversity President Sarah Mangelsdorf said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to our donors, partners, and the broader community whose support makes this historic step possible.”

Founded in 1913, donors say the museum didn’t charge admission for its first 56 years.

Adult entry to the museum is currently $20.

There’s no word yet exactly when those admission fees will be abolished next year.
