An exhibition of photographs to mark Press Freedom Day (Sunday 3 May) is showing this weekend at ST.ART Gallery, Eastcastle Street in Fitzrovia West.

Organised by the Rory Peck Trust, in partnership with news agencies AFP, The Associated Press and Reuters, it features some of the most powerful images of the past 12 months — and the stories behind how they were captured.

It highlights work by photojournalists covering some of the most important and contested stories of our time, including President Trump’s visit to the UK, immigration raids in the United States, the US-Israel war against Iran, the genocide in Gaza and Russia’s continuing war with Ukraine.

Included is the photograph of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor leaving a Norfolk Police station earlier this year, taken by Reuters photojournalist Phil Noble.

The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, focuses on the reality behind the lens, highlighting the risk, judgement and persistence required to produce eyewitness journalism at a time when trust in information is at a low.

It comes after the deadliest year on record for the media which has, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, seen at least 129 journalists and media workers killed in 2025.

Charles Pannell, founder and director of ST.ART Gallery, said:

“In an era where trust in information is constantly under strain, this exhibition serves as a necessary reminder of the reality behind the lens. We are showcasing the persistence and risk that photojournalists take to uphold the truth. I am incredibly proud that ST.ART can provide a platform for these powerful narratives, especially as we mark World Press Freedom Day and reflect on the journalists who have sacrificed everything to keep us informed.”

“Being There: Witness, Truth and Trust” is on until Sunday 3 May 2026 at ST.ART Gallery, 36 Eastcastle Street, London W1W 8DP. Admission is free and the opening hours are from 12noon until 6pm daily. On Sunday 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, a free panel discussion and Q&A with leading journalists, open to the public, will take place in the gallery from 1pm to 1.45pm.
