The Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) is one of the region’s premier visual art institutions, and their spring exhibition – opening Saturday, May 16th – is not to be missed.
The AGB presents the public opening of A material called Earth, Volume 1: The life of corners showcasing the work of Argentinian artist Celina Eceiza, known for vibrant hand-dyed, stitched, and embroidered textile art that is transforming the AGB’s main gallery space into a visually striking immersive environment.

“Conceptually and performatively spun from the inside out—like a bird’s nest or a child’s fortress in a snowbank—this immersive environment plays host to motley sculptures ranging in scale from palm-sized to near-monumental,” reads a statement from the AGB.
“Some are soft, waiting to hold our bodies. Others, hard and mottled, gently cradle colourful ceramics—escapees from the AGB’s collection storage shelves that have erupted through the Gallery floor. With this careful hosting of other artists’ works, Eceiza’s installation casts off the lingering myth of artistic ‘genius’ and its privileged, profitable format—the solo exhibition. Instead, The life of corners declares every exhibition or creative endeavour is collective. No one ever does anything alone.”

On Saturday, May 16th beginning at 1 pm, curator Sylvie Fortin will be joined by artist Celina Eceiza for a talk and tour of this striking new exhibition. In addition, free all-ages programming will be hosted by artist Camila Salcedo, with refreshments provided by Cafe del Cielo and Familia Fine Foods.
Free to attend, the launch of this spring exhibition at the Art Gallery of Burlington will be a treat for local art lovers! Visit the AGB at 1333 Lakeshore Rd, Burlington on Saturday, May 16th at 1 pm, or catch Eceiza’s work on view until August 16th.
