BELLOWS FALLS — Canal Street Art Gallery presents: an opening reception to meet the artists Nancy Fitz-Rapalje, Edward Kingsburry III, and Andy Snyder at Bellows Falls’ 3rd Friday, Oct. 17, from 5-7 p.m.
All gallery events are free and open to the public, for wheelchair accessibility call 802-289-0104.
Andy Snyder, based in Orwell, Vermont, shows a selection from the artist’s diverse range of ceramic designs in the gallery’s new Form and Function Shop. Snyder, a prominent community member, is a supporter of the arts, promoter of culture, and perhaps above all, an activist. Artworks such as “Balloon Cereal Bowls”, “White Clay Sun Mugs” and “Leaf Print Spoon Rests” exemplify Snyder’s playful spirit and deep connection to nature and people. Snyder has been a farmer, teacher, organizer, artist, legislator and bureaucrat, having been born in New York City and spending most of his life in rural Vermont. For Snyder, the human interaction in his artmaking, both in creating it for others to hold, and making work intended for daily use, is paramount to the artist’s process.
Edward Kingsburry III, based in Keene, New Hampshire, shares new large format abstract acrylic paintings. A self taught artist, Kingsburry has worked extensively in drawing and digital mediums, and most recently with painting. For Kingsburry, the work is a spiritual expression of the artist’s practice of prayer while he works, the resulting painting being an abstract representation of God. Kingsburry’s paintings show an intricate pattern of lines layered with many textures of both opaque and translucent color, creating a luminous woven surface, undulating and changing before the eye.
Nancy Fitz-Rapalje, based in Bellows Falls, Vermont, shows a large collection of oil paintings done in observation of some of her favorite subjects, such as lilacs, peaches, books, postcards of admired artists, radishes, asparagus and the agricultural and rural landscape. Fitz-Rapalje, referring to her painting as sketches, describes her practice of painting quickly from observation “a quick drilling of the eye and a short alla prima battle”. For the artist, the finished painting then becomes a reminder of that day she really ‘looked’, and thus to be reinvigorated to do it again.
