Happy Mother’s Day to the fathers who mother, the friends who mother, the mothers of animals and the environment, mothers who have struggled raising children or caring for elderly parents , to those who have lost their mothers and found mothers in other faces. But most of all, HMD to all who mother each other. You make the world a better place.

Sometimes laughter takes over, and nothing else remains. Between my mother and me, time falls away; there is only closeness. Something wordless passes between us, carried from one life into another.

©Marylise Vigneau, Alone in this world, 2024, @marylisevigneau, Lahore, Pakistan, March 18, 2024. Zarwa, 29, aspired to study and achieve self-reliance, but her family insisted on marriage. Her husband was uncommunicative, while her in-laws treated her as a servant. She suffered a miscarriage due to their mistreatment and was unfairly blamed for it. When she became pregnant again, Zarwa endured nine months of hardship, facing threats and being confined to household chores. She eventually fled to her mother’s house, where she gave birth and experienced postpartum depression. After their daughter was born, her husband had an affair and sought a divorce. Battling for custody, Zarwa faced harassment from her lawyer, who manipulated her mother into doubting her sanity. She has found a temporary refuge at the Dastak shelter, a place that offers legal consultancy and protection to women who have been subjected to violence or threats of violence.
