Fishguard and Goodwick’s Art Afoot trail targeted by vandals

The Art Afoot trail opened in Fishguard and Goodwick last month.

The trail of sculptures and virtual art work was commissioned by Pembrokeshire County Council with UK Government funding and was designed and delivered by Cardigan’s Small World Theatre.

The artworks were designed and made by local artists after consultation with residents of the twin towns.

Last week five signs showing visitors around the sculpture trails which take in Goodwick Parrog, the Marine Walk, the community orchard and town centre sites were deliberately cut from their posts.

Pembrokeshire County Council says that the Art Afoot trail has become popular with locals and visitors since it was launched last month.

“Petty vandals have targeted signs for Fishguard’s art trail causing around £400 of damage,” said a council spokesperson.

“Pembrokeshire County Council has contacted Dyfed-Powys Police after five metal fingerpost way markers appear to have been deliberately cut from signposts in Fishguard recently.

“The signs direct residents and visitors to the Art Afoot /Celf ar Droed trail, which launched in December and has been a popular attraction in the seaside town, funded by UK Government.”

The spokesperson added that it seemed as though the Art Afoot signs had been deliberately targeted, as other signs on the same post had not been vandalised.

A local resident found one of the cut off signs and reported it to Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council.

Among the signs vandalised were one at the start of the Marine Walk, another on the pathway between the community orchard near Ysgol Bro Gwaun and one by the bypass.

Anybody with any information on the vandalised signs can contact Dyfed-Powys Police through https://bit.ly/DPPContactOnline, by emailing 101@dyfed-powys.police.uk, or by calling 101.

Alternatively, people can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555111, or visiting crimestoppers-uk.org.
