A record-breaking 458 artworks were submitted for this year’s Northumberland Open Exhibition at Woodhorn Museum, showcasing the region’s diverse artistic talent.
A total of 379 pieces by amateur and professional artists have been selected for the exhibition, which opens on February 22.
The annual event celebrates painters, sculptors and glassmakers from across the North East.
It comes at an exciting time for the museum, as it prepares to join with 11 other sites as part of the newly renamed and expanded North East Museums.
Robert Newton from Rowlands Gill was named overall winner for his painting English Pastoral, with four other artists receiving commendations.
Robert said: “To be accepted to an open, juried exhibition is a major milestone for any artist, whatever stage they are in their career, and it’s always a worthwhile component of one’s artistic practice.
“To win first prize came as a surprise and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the jury for selecting my work, and also congratulations to all of the other artists and makers who have been selected and have work highly commended.
“Thanks to the team at Woodhorn Museum for their hard work, this promises to be an exciting exhibition and I’m looking forward to seeing the exhibition and meeting everyone.”
Visitors can also vote for a ‘People’s Choice Award’, announced at the exhibition’s close on June 1.
Liz Ritson, director of programmes & engagement at Woodhorn Museum, added: “For many artists, the Open Exhibition will be the first time they’ve presented their work in a professional gallery setting.
“It’s an opportunity to showcase their work alongside their peers and reach an audience of thousands.
“Many of the works featured in the Northumberland Open Exhibition will be available to buy, so it’s an exciting experience for the artists involved.
“It’s also a chance for visitors to the gallery to leave with a unique piece of art too.”
