In a significant development for Nigeria’s art community, the Director General of the National Gallery of Art, Ahmed Bashir Sodangi, has announced that the agency is in the final stages of launching a comprehensive digital platform designed to certify artists across the nation.
According to him, this initiative aims to enhance the authenticity of Nigerian art and establish a credible global market for artists.
The NGA boss further stated that the certification process is intended to bolster the recognition of Nigerian artists, ensuring that their work is validated and respected both locally and internationally.
Sodangi made this known at the third International Art Fair in Abuja, with the theme “Intersection of Treasures.” The exhibition displayed 48 captivating art pieces from 25 artists who told stories through lenses and metaphors.
The Director General highlighted the fair’s goal of promoting art, particularly Nigerian art, while also establishing a structured certification system. This initiative by the National Gallery of Art aims to enhance the market value and visibility of artists in an increasingly competitive global arena.
“This Art Fair facilitates valuable exchanges with an international audience, allowing artists to connect, collaborate, and showcase the creativity of Nigerian artists to the world. Our digital platform is designed to streamline the certification process and grant artists greater access to international markets, enabling them to present their work to a broader audience. This initiative is poised to significantly enhance opportunities for Nigerian artists, fostering collaboration with global art communities,” he concluded.
Curator Mufu Onifade emphasized that the fair brings together artists from diverse ethnic backgrounds, celebrating the substantial contributions of Nigerian artists to the global prominence of Nigerian art.
He shared that the National Gallery of Art is committed to nurturing young talent by implementing programs for students at various educational levels, from primary to university.
In his words: “It’s essential to promote artists alongside the arts, which is why bringing these artists together is so crucial. We have numerous programs aimed at young artists, including a national art competition where emerging talents are invited to showcase their work. The best pieces are recognized with monetary awards, encouraging and appreciating their creative endeavors.”
Helen Nzete, one of the exhibiting artists, expressed that art fairs can be transformative for artists, providing opportunities to present their work to potential collectors, curators, and fellow artists from around the globe.
She emphasized that participation in art fairs goes beyond merely selling artwork; it fosters valuable networking, constructive feedback, and instills confidence by connecting artists to a larger community.
“Sometimes, a single conversation at a fair can lead to opportunities such as residencies, gallery exhibitions, or press coverage that can significantly advance an artist’s career,” she added.
