Summit Art Gallery showcases expressive sketches | News, Sports, Jobs

WEIRTON — The Top of West Virginia Arts Council will present “Wednesday Morning,” a group exhibition opening at the Summit Art Gallery on Wednesday.

Unlike traditional gallery shows, “Wednesday Morning” offers a look at the raw and expressive sketches created during weekly figure drawing sessions hosted at the gallery by members of the Arts Council.

An opening reception will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, at the gallery, located inside the Top of West Virginia CVB at 243 Three Springs Drive, Suite 17, Weirton. The exhibition will remain on display through May 30, and is free and open to the public.

The show features works by Linda Craig, Gina Judy, Janice McSherry, Jaci Rice, Lorraine Robinson, Georgia Tambasis, and Bob Watson. These artists gather each Wednesday morning to draw from life in a collaborative setting. The group began as an idea proposed by Rice. Each week, the artists bring their own materials, take turns posing for one another, and spend an hour capturing the human figure in a variety of styles and media.

“There’s a primal joy in drawing,” shared Tambasis. “It’s direct, intuitive, and expressive. Each of us brings our own visual language to the page, and together, we learn experiment, and support one another.”

More than just a display of drawings,” Wednesday Morning” invites viewers to connect with the artistic process and even participate. The weekly drawing sessions are open to anyone. Interested individuals are welcome to bring a sketchbook and pencil and join in.

“Whether you’re an experienced artist or a curious beginner, there’s something special about drawing with others. It’s not about the outcome, it’s about the act of creating, observing, and sharing,” said Tambasis.
