As summer approaches, the Art Gallery of Swift Current is gearing up for a season full of creativity, connection, and community with various programs tailored for all ages and skill levels.
“We have lots of summer programs coming up,” said Morghie Flaterud, the gallery’s program coordinator. For the spring, we have some ceramics workshops coming up.”
The first is Pot to Planting, a hands-on ceramic workshop that kicks off on May 14. Shortly after, on May 22, the Handmade Cup Workshop invites participants to learn how to cut and fold a slab of clay into beautiful, personalized cups.
“This workshop is good for beginners and intermediate ceramicists alike,” said Flaterud. “It’s a great way to hang out with your friends, too.”
In July, the gallery introduces a brand-new initiative: Art Adventure Camp. This immersive, week-long experience is designed for two age groups—8 to 10 and 11 to 14—and runs over three weeks.
“We’ve decided to spearhead this new program this year,” Flaterud explained. “Over the week, campers will build themselves an immersive adventure world through art, storytelling, and world-building activities.”
The program nurtures children’s creative instincts, encouraging them to design characters, invent fantastical settings, and tell their stories through various artistic media.
“People, humans and kids in particular, have a natural ability to want to create and collaborate,” said Flaterud.
“We just thought it would be a fun new program to try. And yes, they’ll also have time to swim at the Fairview Pool every day, since it will be July and hot.”
For adults seeking a more serene escape, the gallery has partnered with Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park to offer a Creative Getaway, a weekend retreat in June and July at the picturesque Lamping Resorts.
“It’s like a two-day immersive getaway that offers a restorative experience on land,” said Flaterud.
Participants will participate in various nature-based art workshops, including plant teachings from expert wild forager and herbalist Brandy Morris, a pit firing session with Jay Kimball, and yoga and meditation guided by Fran Gilboy.
“You also get to make your hydrosol using the herbs you’ve collected,” added Flaterud. The all-inclusive weekend also features meals by local favourites Made Café and Nightjar Diner and guided hikes to embrace the park’s natural beauty fully.
Registration for all programs is now open. Interested participants can sign up online at artgalleryofswiftcurrent.org, call (306) 778-2736, or visit the gallery in person.
