Alicia Doel, who is about to graduate from her art curating degree, launched the exhibition at the Artsy Image Gallery to gain hands-on experience outside of her studies and become more involved in Colchester’s arts community.
Titled The Things We Learned to Ignore, the exhibition opened on Saturday, May 2 and closes on Friday, May 8.
It brings together the work of 35 artists across painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture and drawing.
Alicia said: “The exhibition has been an incredibly rewarding experience, with a lovely turnout throughout the week and such positive engagement from visitors and the local creative community.
“It was also a really meaningful opportunity to create a platform for both established and emerging artists within Colchester’s creative scene while developing my own curatorial practice beyond university.”
Alicia launched the exhibition after searching for opportunities to curate projects independently.
This started off as sharing the exhibitions she visited in and around Colchester on Instagram, and then progressing to interviews with artists, which now get shared on Colne Radio.
The exhibition focuses on the quieter things people often overlook emotionally, socially and personally.
Alicia said: “It was amazing to see so many conversations sparked through the work on display.”
