The centrepiece mural of a colourful street art project is nearing completion on a Kettering ‘walk, wheel and scoot’ route.
It is part of a major new street art project – bringing murals, painted telecom boxes and performance art to key walking and cycling routes into town as part of a drive to boost active travel and support local businesses.
‘Art on the Route as You Walk, Wheel or Scoot’ is a collaborative project by three local social enterprises, supported by a Creative Climate Action grant from Northamptonshire Community Foundation.
Co-ordinated by Brightwayz – an active travel social enterprise, the project combines striking public artwork, live performance and practical information to make journeys along Stamford Road more appealing – and to encourage people to leave their cars at home.
Artists Sally Leach and Daisy Farrar-Hayton have been transforming the wall next to Fade Empire Barbers in Stamford Road.
As well as co-ordinating partners and the public programme, Brightwayz is developing an app trail, wax-rubbing posts and printed information guides for visitors to enjoy along the route.
The Stamford Road wall mural, designed by local illustrator Sally Leach of Kettering Street Art CIC, is the centrepiece of year one of the project.
Year 1 pupils from nearby St Mary’s Primary School recently took part in a workshop exploring the ways they love to travel – cycling, scooting and walking. Their designs will directly inspire artwork created for the route.
Laugh Out Loud Theatre Company will deliver an in-school performance and workshop at a further local school, with ‘walking performances’ for the public taking place at the main public launch on Saturday, July 4 along the route.
