The Wyllieum in Greenock announces new art exhibition

From February 21 to May 31, 2026, the gallery will host an exhibition of the work of former customs officer and artist George Wyllie.

The exhibition – titled ‘From the Clyde to Sarajevo and the Venice Lagoon’ – will feature work from throughout the life of the artist and customs officer.

The exhibition will look at Wyllie’s relationship with the Royal Scottish Academy and his relationship with key artists in Scotland and abroad.

It will include work by Frank Pottinger, Andrew Stenhouse, Gareth Fisher, Jake Harvey, Fred Bushe and George Wyllie, on loan from the RSA Collections.

The exhibition has been curated by RSA Past President Arthur Watson.

On June 27, the work of Claire Barclay will go on display in a commissioned exhibition revisiting the work of artist Joseph Beuys, who George befriended in the 1980s.

The gallery said this exhibition will ‘instil respect for the uncontrollable and changeable nature of the sea’ and prompt thinking about ‘how we deal with patterns and unpredictability within our lives’.
