The Painting of the Week podcast, co-hosted by BAFTA-winning director Phil Grabsky and art enthusiast Laura Bentham, is embarking on a new series to make art more accessible.
In its sixth season, the podcast will delve into an array of artworks, from iconic masterpieces to lesser-known gems, all through the distinct perspectives of both hosts.
The new series, which broadcast its second episode on Thursday, August 14, sees the duo travelling to Petworth House in West Sussex to talk about JMW Turner’s ‘The Lake, Petworth, Sunset, Fighting Bucks at Petworth.’
The artwork is part of the house’s impressive art collection and is displayed in the ‘Carved Room.’
The episode features a discussion with Dr Emily Knight, the curator at Petworth House, exploring the artwork, the house’s rich art collection, and Turner’s connection to the area.
The podcast episode coincides with the Turner’s Vision at Petworth exhibition, which runs until Sunday, November 16.
This exhibition provides a deeper insight into the artist’s work and his relationship with Petworth.
The following week, the podcast takes listeners to Sussex once again.
On Thursday, August 21, an episode will be dedicated to a unique sculpture carved from bog oak.
The sculpture, named ‘Cabriole,’ is a representation of a ballet dancer mid-leap and was crafted by a master sculptor from a Sussex peat bog.
The bog oak used for the sculpture was preserved for nearly 6,000 years, making this episode a fascinating exploration of art, history, and nature’s preservation.
Throughout the series, the podcast hosts are joined by special guests, including authors, historians and curators, who bring additional insights into the art world.

Listeners can also look forward to episodes on Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper,’ Matisse’s ‘Woman Reading at a Yellow Table,’ and a cycling poster by Toulouse-Lautrec, among others.
Phil Grabsky, the founder of Exhibition on Screen, brings his expert knowledge to the podcast, while Laura Bentham contributes her curiosity and enthusiasm for art.
Together, they offer an engaging and accessible podcast for both seasoned art lovers and those just starting their journey.
